Shades come in various shapes, sizes, colors and people wear them for different reasons.

welcome, summer

As it is summer in our country now, we see people wearing shades to protect their eyes and avoid the damaging effects of the sun. So primarily, sunglasses serve as eye protection. However, when people wear them even without the sun, then the shades could have functions other than the first one I mentioned.

as cover up

Sometimes people wear shades to cover up certain eye defects: cross-eyed, closed-eyed, one-eyed, or eyes which are of different shapes or sizes. That is why we see blind beggars mostly wearing sunglasses because instead of eyes, they only two holes there. An example is a local male celebrity in the Philippines, Randy Santiago, who is never seen without a pair because one of his eyes is smaller than the other or what they call "kirat," an uncommon eye defect.

as beauty prop

You will all agree with me that shades, if chosen well, have a way giving improving one's appearance. Sunglasses make the wearer look better or more appealing. Beauty is in the eye of the shades-wearer.

for fashion

Shades may also be worn for fashion. Shades, like clothes, also have their own unique styles and it is easy to tell the age of the person by the shades he/she wears. Do you remember the Beatles? It was around their time when small circular shades became fashionable. Jackie O is always remembered for her huge sunglasses which she always wore wherever she went.

the MIB

Secret agents or the Men in Black are always associated with dark big shades. Why? Well, it must be part of their uniform which is composed of a black suit and heavy black shades. The total effect is that of toughness and coolness. Their counterparts, the bad guys, in addition to their mustaches, may also wear shades to make them appear tougher than they really are.

conceal emotions

Wearing a pair of shades would help when people go on a confrontation. The shades would cover watery eyes and batting eyelashes. In funerals, the shades are worn by people in grief to hide swollen eyes, mascara and eye make up running or smearing the eye areas.

no make-up

Women who are in a hurry and are used to wearing make-up may be in an emergency situation which calls for them to rush to one place without any make-up on. The shades are usually used to prevent the feeling of awkwardness in situations like this.

for effect or prop

And lastly, some people wear sunglasses for props only. They just want to impress others by flaunting their newly-purchased pair of designer eyeglasses--Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabanna or Moss Lipow sunglasses which could cost one a fortune.

sore eyes or whatever

Lastly, people wear shades when they have sore eyes. Whatever your reasons are for wearing shades when the sun is out, is all up to you. But as for me, I have stopped wearing them after I lose each pair I bought. They are like umbrellas. You lose them every time.

My writing will be about life in general. I'd been a teacher before I shifted to being a self-employed person. I happen to have several interests, like I'm a dog-lover, I love to dance and sing too.

Great share, rarity. Sunlight easily irritates my eyes and when you stare into mine eyes they can hypnotise you. ;-)
