This is a story of how children perceive things in ways you wouldn't think.

The liver

When my youngest daughter had been in kindergarten for about two weeks, she came home very upset. She told me that we had to have liver for dinner. I despise the taste and smell of liver, and therefore I refuse to cook it. I told her no, I was not making liver for dinner. At this point my daughter became very distraught, to the point of tears. I was quite confused and asked her why she was so insistent on having liver. She said, "If we don't have liver the guards will get us!" Needless to say, this only served to confuse me further. So I asked her what guards she was talking about. "The invisible ones" she sobbed.

She was getting more upset by the moment, and I was getting more baffled by the moment. I decided my best course of action at this point was to try to locate the origin of her concerns. "Who told you about the guards and the liver?" I asked. Her response didn't have the clarifying response I had hoped. "My teacher" she sobbed, wiping her eyes. Somehow I had to get to the bottom of this! I asked her to tell me exactly what her teacher told her.

"She makes us say it every day, Mama...I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States
of 'Merica. One nation under guard, invisible, with liver and just this for all.
