Why the Royal Palace in Madrid remains empty and what the visitor exclaimed after his friend´s explaination.

Such big house for an only family

The Royal Palace of Madrid stands on an attractive and secluded square with flower beds, leafy trees as soon as Spring arrives, statues of many of the kings and the once Royal Theatre opposite -today Opera House opened to the public.
It dates since the Century 9th and it´s been the home for most of the Spanish kings since Carlos The Third when they had finished building it in 1755. It keeps major paintings and works of art by many Spanish painters and artists as well as having been built with the best materials such as Spanish marble or mahogany wood in door and window frames. It´s got over 3,000 rooms and it´s also been home for the King´s Courtmen.
On these days, the king of Spain doesn´t live there and we don´t know whether it´s way too big for them or because it´s way too centrally located nearby the city centre where all the protest demonstrations end. Me moved to a estately house outside Madrid and he only goes to the Royal Palace to attend official events.
Whatever, this huge building hasn´t had a tenant since 1931 when the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed and Alfonso The Thirteen (1) had to flee to exile.
On one day, as I strolled in the surroundings, I overheard this brief conversation. One of the two men told the other about the building, how and when it was built and all the riches it keeps inside. When he finished his explaination, both of them remained in silence, looking at the majestic building. After few minutes, the one who seemed to be a visitor in Madrid, exclaimed all of a sudden: "Heavens! Such big and costly house to dwel an only family. What a waste!"
(1) Alfonso The Thirteen was king Juan Carlos´s grandfather.
