The response to opening day of any sport brings about mixed emotions to many-excitement, anticipation, but also apprehension. The obsession with a sport can have consequences, but most folks have learned moderation, and some are never captured by the love of the game. The range of responses to opening day are a continuum, similar to the "on a scale of one to ten where would you put..."

The Measure of a Man's Love for the Sport

This is not intended as a scientific scale, but could be used as a means to classify the level of interest, commitment or obsession with the given sport (soccer, baseball, football, etc). See if you recognize a friend, neighbor or member of your family!
1). Doesn't know about any home teams (for his state or country), and doesn't care.
2). Has heard of the sport, but knows none of the players, positions or rules.
3). Knows the name of the home team (and nothing else).
4). Watches the game of the home team if coerced.
5). Watches the home team, and knows the names of the other teams in the league.
6). Watches every game, knows the players, and their averages. May attend a game
7). Watches every game, records the games and re-watches the games.
8). Has season tickets and attends games. Missed his mother-in-law's viewing so he could attend a home game.
9). Attends every game, has their uniform, and wears it watching the game.
10). Kisses wife and children on opening day, He hopes they will make the play-offs. He also hopes he will be able to get re-acquainted with the family at the end of the season.
