Bible Passages Out of Context - Odd Judicial Laws
A look at the peculiar and oddly specific laws that God had for men.
Man should follow God's laws...no matter how weird they get.
The Bible is one of the greatest books to read.
The danger comes when a person misinterprets what is trying to be said and takes it as face value.
This is one of those times.
Exodus 22 - 23
The correct context:
In this passage, the people of God are given rules to follow so as not to lead lives similar to the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah. The specifics of the laws aren’t so important as compared to the overall message that if the grace of God had appeared to them, then it has taught them and enabled them to conduct themselves in accordance to how it would want them to.
Out of context:
It is a good thing that these laws weren’t to be followed to the T because there are quite a few…..weird laws.
Case in point:
If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed;
But if it happens after sunrise, he is guilty of bloodshed. "A thief must certainly make restitution, but if he has nothing, he must be sold to pay for his theft.
If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife.
If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins.
Do not allow a sorceress to live.
Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must be put to death.
Bring the best of the first fruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God. "Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk.
