Behind the Scenes of a Hotel - Introduction

If you've never worked in a hotel or restaurant or similar business you're probably not aware of how much people skills you must have to get through the day. In addition to cooking, cleaning and general customer service you may have to act as a psychologist or social worker. Read these stories to get a glimpse of what goes on the inside!

People Skills are Important

Many years ago I lost my job as a secretary at a small electronics company due to cutbacks. There were few similar positions available so I had to take whatever I could find. I ended up working for a small hotel or inn for four years. If you haven’t worked in a similar business you probably can’t imagine how many strange characters and personalities you have to deal with on a daily basis. Think of it; who stays at a hotel? The answer is ANYONE! Absolutely all kinds of people need accommodation.

This little hotel also had a small restaurant where the guests could get a decent meal, and we also served fast food like hamburgers and hot dogs. As employees we had to take care of everything, even cleaning the rooms when the room maids were absent. We were cooks, waitresses, receptionists, cleaners and even psychologists and babysitters at times.

Dealing with Grumpy People

Right next to the hotel there was a ferry terminal for the ferries crossing the Oslo fjord. Close by you could also find the dock of the smaller ferry bringing inmates to the prison on the island Bastøy. This prison is a so called open prison which means that the prisoners are out during the day attending school or working. They often came by the diner to grab a cup of coffee or a newspaper while they were waiting for the ferry. A lot of interesting people there!

Occasionally the big ferry to Moss was delayed, and people had to wait for several hours to get across the fjord. They also came by the diner for coffee or a meal or just to pass time. Believe me! Impatient people waiting in a queue for a ferry for more than 30 minutes are not happy! They’re not even polite! A lot of interesting people there! Some of them had to let some steam out and find someone to blame. Anyone! Guess who had to deal with them? We, the employees at the hotel had to serve them and try our very best to make their day a little brighter. It didn’t always work! Annoyed customers really knew how to make our day miserable although we had nothing to do with the delays.

Good and Bad Memories

Working in the reception was ok, dealing with grumpy people and being responsible for all the chores whereof cooking and cleaning were the main tasks and something I got to practice at home, I decided to quit and look for something else. Waking up in the middle of the night dreading what was waiting for me at work the next morning, was not what I wanted.

Fortunately I worked with some really cool people, and of course I met a lot of nice guests. Some good memories and a lot of laughter came out of my four years of hotel experience too. Looking back at this period of my life makes me realize that I have some stories to tell!

More to come….

You Grace,
Great piece.
The totally different kinds of people, emotions and attitudes...what a great way to really expand your own insight and introspective. Let alone get a master's degree in people reading, phsycology and handling!
I'm sure after a while you could read a lot of people, where they were from and some idea of how to handle them from the very start.
I bet you shared some wonderful experiences and stories too!
I did a lot of exporting and had similar experiences. I am now glad I did. I still have some very good far flung friends.
Thank you for sharing and know that that is a great resource pool for future posts, in content and point of view.
Thanks again!
Only the best,
Dan

Thank you for your comment, Dan! I did indeed learn a lot about people and how to handle them. I knew trouble before they opened their mouth and could also tell what they were about to order. :-) Sometimes I wanted to throw something at them too! LOL

Yep, I'm human! And I wasn't thinking of throwing flower petals at them either. It was more like pots and pans! :-)

To deal with grumps, its easy, just ignore them, they set themselves right... But with mad people they go madder. Its as simple as that....
Incidentally they end up being disgraced because of their own making...
Well you are injuring them, explains why they are grumpy, pots and pans, jeez, explains the whole story, you are the cause of the pain and suffering.

Whoa there Lady,
The author only stated what she, as a human, suffering abuse...felt and thought!
There is a wide void between what all of us think and what we actually do!
I am sure anyone who suffers abuse at the hands of another will at some point have a thought of similar negativity cross their minds!
A better way of getting your view across would have been better suited to engage the author in a proper Q&A and ask questions before you throw accusations.
From the appearance of your position and response, I wouldn't find it hard to believe you were one of those grumpy patrons that thinks they have a right to abuse others because of their dis-pleasures!
And as you have directly accused her "you are the cause of the pain and suffering.: so the finger you point has three pointing back at you!
Only the best,
Dan
