Another incident at the hotel. Some people think they have the right to be rude.

New Check-In Policy

As a result of dishonest guests who tried to run away from their bills, we had to introduce a new policy; never to give out the room key unless a credit card was presented or cash payment was received in advance. This is a common practice in many countries so we didn’t expect any problems because of it. We were wrong!

The Right to be Rude?

A neatly dressed couple in their forties or fifties arrived one day and wanted to check in. I asked the man to fill out a form. I also asked him whether he would pay cash or credit. The wife did not approach the desk. He said he would pay the next morning. I asked for his credit card and politely told him that I was not allowed to give him the key unless he paid cash or presented a credit card.

The man got furious! His face turned red as he yelled out: “WHAT? I am the director of a big company and I often come here to do business with an even bigger and renowned company here in town!”

How to Tell the Wheat from the Chaff

I kept calm and explained to him that I was only doing my job according to the hotel policy and that I could not treat one guest differently from another. “YOU SHOULD KNOW HOW TO TELL THE WHEAT FROM THE CHAFF!” he screamed. At this moment his wife left the scene in embarrassment.

I restrained myself, but I had to ask him how to know the difference. That made his temper step up a notch as he started to yell again: “GET YOUR BOSS OUT HERE! I WANNA TALK TO HIM!” I told him that it wouldn’t make any difference, but of course, I would let him talk to my boss.

My boss, who was 10 years younger than me and not a he, but a she, came out to speak with him. She had witnessed the whole scene from the kitchen (probably giggling). Now she told him exactly what I had told him. He finally gave up and gave us his credit card number.

And this man is running a business? Whatever business it was it definitely had nothing to do with anger management! His wife actually came down later to apologize on his behalf.

So how can you tell the wheat from the chaff? I think I just showed you!
